Teaching Business Ethics When No One Is Watching

Ethics is easy on a slide and hard on a deadline. A business school teacher on how to make the lesson stick.

Ethics Is a Practice, Not a Module

In my years teaching at BRAC University, I have seen ethics treated as a topic to be covered in week nine and then forgotten. The students who keep it are the ones who practise it under pressure.

Making It Concrete

  • Use real cases. Bangladeshi procurement, garment subcontracting and pharmaceutical pricing give better material than any imported textbook.
  • Make them choose. Give a case where every branch costs someone something.
  • Follow up. Ask what they decided six months later, not only what they wrote in the exam.

A Message to Current Students

To the students of Jagannath University: the decisions that define your career will not be the easy ones. Decide now what you will not do, because you will not have time to reason it out on the day.
